Walking your pet can be an enjoyable activity, but being a good pet parent means remembering your furry friend’s safety. Keep these tips in mind so your walk doesn’t end up with a trip to the vet.

Don’t Overdo It

Some breeds are more active than others, and some like to run, while others like to waddle. Always be aware of both what your breed and your specific dog can handle. If you’re trying to get your own exercise as well, remember that humans are some of the most efficient runners on the planet. Even what’s a light jog for you can be too much for most dogs, and many dogs will overexert themselves trying to keep you happy if you aren’t careful.

Use Boots in Extreme Weather

Paws do not provide good protection against hot pavement. If it feels hot to your touch, it can burn a paw. Don’t forget that pavement out in the sun can be many times hotter than the air temperature.

Cold sidewalks and snow aren’t as big a worry if you don’t stay out too long, but the salt used to keep sidewalks clear can do a lot of damage. Always boot up when going out in the snow.

Know What Cars Can See

Especially for smaller breeds, remember that it’s much easier for drivers to see a tall person than a small dog or cat below eye level. This is especially true when a car is going through a parking lot or around bushes. Always keep your pet close to you if you need to walk through traffic.

Be a Good Neighbor When Around Others

If someone else is walking their pet, stay beyond leash distance until you have talked to the other owner and you both say it’s OK. You never know how another animal is going to react or if the owner is already working on problem behavior.

The same thing goes for other people. Not everyone wants strange dogs running up to them. Teach your dog not to say hello until you say it’s OK.

If you're like most residents of apartments in Cary, N.C., who have recently decided to share their lives with a furry friend in the form of a puppy, you're undoubtedly looking forward to spending many happy years in the company of your canine companion. Naturally, you're taking precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of your pet. However, with the holiday season coming up, you might want to put normal precautions into overdrive because this time of year is particularly dangerous for domestic pets. Here's what you can do to keep your new friend as safe and happy as possible while not sacrificing celebrations and festivities.

Leave Your Pet at Home When You Go Out to Celebrate

Although it may be tempting to take your furry friend along when you attend holiday parades or other outdoor seasonal gatherings, it's best to leave your pet at home. Puppies are often overwhelmed by too much noise and movement, which often causes them to panic, slip out of their collars and run. Many dogs get lost this way every year, and sadly, many of them are never found by their owners, even if they've been micro-chipped.

Create a Quiet Room for Your Pet When You Host Festivities

It's not cruel to create a quiet room for your pup to stay while you're hosting festivities. You may feel as if you're leaving your pet out of the fun, but you're actually protecting it from potentially harmful situations. For instance, with your door opening and closing a lot, your pet may be tempted to bolt. Small puppies also are at risk of being stepped on during seasonal soirees when spirits are high and no one's really paying attention to where they're putting their feet.

Be Mindful That Many Holiday Foods Are Bad for Dogs

Garlic, onions, chocolate and many other foods associated with holiday feasting are flat-out harmful to dogs. Guests may be tempted to slip your pet a treat, which could end up with you having to cut the festivities short to pay a visit to the local emergency vet.

We've got several floor plans designed to fit a variety of living situations. Please reach out to us today to find out more.

With more and more Cary apartments offering pet-friendly policies, an increasing number of apartment community residents are bringing dogs to be part of their homes. Yet, if you are among those who have a dog at home in your apartment, you face one potential problem: How will you keep your pooch entertained while you are away at work during the day? Here are some tips to help keep your dog from getting bored and into mischief, even while you’re not home.

Turn on the Tube

Believe it or not, your dog can benefit from having the TV on. Turn it on to a pet-friendly channel, and your dog will be engaged by the sound and sights of other animals on the screen. Even just the sound of the television can prevent boredom while you’re not home.

Use Treat Toys

Toys can help keep your dog busy and protect your furniture from errant chewing. Find toys that hold treats to encourage your dog to play. These can be as simple as Kong toys filled with peanut butter, or they can be more complex, like toys that have a time-release feature. Fill the toy with your dog’s favorite goodies, and only give it to play with when you are gone so it remains novel.

Consider Time Released Feeding

Feeding options that offer time-released methods can help keep your pet engaged. Feeding a little bit at a time will engage your pet and keep them guessing about when more food is coming.

Install a WebCam

Does your pet get lonely while you are gone, or do you wonder how they are doing? A webcam can give you the option to check in on them. Some products even offer a screen you can use to talk to your dog while you’re gone, face to face.

Hire a Dog Walking Service

Cary has many dog walking services you can use to get your dog some exercise while you’re at work. Choose a trustworthy company, and hire them to come while you’re gone to take your dog about and tire him out a bit.
