Walking your pet can be an enjoyable activity, but being a good pet parent means remembering your furry friend’s safety. Keep these tips in mind so your walk doesn’t end up with a trip to the vet.

Don’t Overdo It

Some breeds are more active than others, and some like to run, while others like to waddle. Always be aware of both what your breed and your specific dog can handle. If you’re trying to get your own exercise as well, remember that humans are some of the most efficient runners on the planet. Even what’s a light jog for you can be too much for most dogs, and many dogs will overexert themselves trying to keep you happy if you aren’t careful.

Use Boots in Extreme Weather

Paws do not provide good protection against hot pavement. If it feels hot to your touch, it can burn a paw. Don’t forget that pavement out in the sun can be many times hotter than the air temperature.

Cold sidewalks and snow aren’t as big a worry if you don’t stay out too long, but the salt used to keep sidewalks clear can do a lot of damage. Always boot up when going out in the snow.

Know What Cars Can See

Especially for smaller breeds, remember that it’s much easier for drivers to see a tall person than a small dog or cat below eye level. This is especially true when a car is going through a parking lot or around bushes. Always keep your pet close to you if you need to walk through traffic.

Be a Good Neighbor When Around Others

If someone else is walking their pet, stay beyond leash distance until you have talked to the other owner and you both say it’s OK. You never know how another animal is going to react or if the owner is already working on problem behavior.

The same thing goes for other people. Not everyone wants strange dogs running up to them. Teach your dog not to say hello until you say it’s OK.

If you're like most residents of apartments in Cary, N.C., who have recently decided to share their lives with a furry friend in the form of a puppy, you're undoubtedly looking forward to spending many happy years in the company of your canine companion. Naturally, you're taking precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of your pet. However, with the holiday season coming up, you might want to put normal precautions into overdrive because this time of year is particularly dangerous for domestic pets. Here's what you can do to keep your new friend as safe and happy as possible while not sacrificing celebrations and festivities.

Leave Your Pet at Home When You Go Out to Celebrate

Although it may be tempting to take your furry friend along when you attend holiday parades or other outdoor seasonal gatherings, it's best to leave your pet at home. Puppies are often overwhelmed by too much noise and movement, which often causes them to panic, slip out of their collars and run. Many dogs get lost this way every year, and sadly, many of them are never found by their owners, even if they've been micro-chipped.

Create a Quiet Room for Your Pet When You Host Festivities

It's not cruel to create a quiet room for your pup to stay while you're hosting festivities. You may feel as if you're leaving your pet out of the fun, but you're actually protecting it from potentially harmful situations. For instance, with your door opening and closing a lot, your pet may be tempted to bolt. Small puppies also are at risk of being stepped on during seasonal soirees when spirits are high and no one's really paying attention to where they're putting their feet.

Be Mindful That Many Holiday Foods Are Bad for Dogs

Garlic, onions, chocolate and many other foods associated with holiday feasting are flat-out harmful to dogs. Guests may be tempted to slip your pet a treat, which could end up with you having to cut the festivities short to pay a visit to the local emergency vet.

We've got several floor plans designed to fit a variety of living situations. Please reach out to us today to find out more.

With more and more Cary apartments offering pet-friendly policies, an increasing number of apartment community residents are bringing dogs to be part of their homes. Yet, if you are among those who have a dog at home in your apartment, you face one potential problem: How will you keep your pooch entertained while you are away at work during the day? Here are some tips to help keep your dog from getting bored and into mischief, even while you’re not home.

Turn on the Tube

Believe it or not, your dog can benefit from having the TV on. Turn it on to a pet-friendly channel, and your dog will be engaged by the sound and sights of other animals on the screen. Even just the sound of the television can prevent boredom while you’re not home.

Use Treat Toys

Toys can help keep your dog busy and protect your furniture from errant chewing. Find toys that hold treats to encourage your dog to play. These can be as simple as Kong toys filled with peanut butter, or they can be more complex, like toys that have a time-release feature. Fill the toy with your dog’s favorite goodies, and only give it to play with when you are gone so it remains novel.

Consider Time Released Feeding

Feeding options that offer time-released methods can help keep your pet engaged. Feeding a little bit at a time will engage your pet and keep them guessing about when more food is coming.

Install a WebCam

Does your pet get lonely while you are gone, or do you wonder how they are doing? A webcam can give you the option to check in on them. Some products even offer a screen you can use to talk to your dog while you’re gone, face to face.

Hire a Dog Walking Service

Cary has many dog walking services you can use to get your dog some exercise while you’re at work. Choose a trustworthy company, and hire them to come while you’re gone to take your dog about and tire him out a bit.

If you are looking for a pet-friendly community offering spacious Cary, NC apartments, schedule a tour of Audubon Park Apartments today.

The summer heat poses a critical risk to our beloved pets’ health. We hope our Audubon Parc residents in Cary, North Carolina, find these summer safety suggestions helpful.

Hydration Is Job One

Hot days often cause pets, particularly dogs, to pant more heavily. During the exhaling process, they are prone to lose vital hydration. Although panting is your pet's way to lower its body temperature, excessive fluid loss can lead to a health risk. Always keep your pet's bowl supplied with cool, clean drinking water. If you have the option of bringing your beloved pet to a wading pool on hot days, that can be a welcome way to reduce heat stress.

Haircuts Are In Style This Summer

Breeds that grow hair all year long may benefit from a summer trim. The reduced insulation will likely offer them a welcome relief from the searing temperatures. But be sure to check with experts and groomers about whether giving your pet a trim is a wise decision. Certain breeds may suffer coat damage from being shaved.

Got Shade?

Direct sunlight can have a debilitating effect on pets. Animals with dark fur are even more prone to suffer from exposure because darker colors tend to absorb heat. Consider taking your pet for walks in parks and along trails that have sufficient tree cover and shade. Remember to stop after direct sunlight exposure and give them some time in a cool, shady spot.

Hot Cars Are Off Limits

It may seem okay to crack your vehicle windows and run into a store quickly during the cold winter months. That’s simply not the case during summer. The temperature inside your car, truck or SUV could leap up 20 degrees in a matter of minutes. Even if you have the best intentions of running in and out, there’s always that chance of a distraction or impediment. Your precious pet’s health and safety are not worth the risk. Either frequent pet-friendly stores or shop another day.

Enjoy the Cool Comforts of Home

This summer is bound to be another scorcher. On unseasonably hot days, make your furry friend comfortable in your digs. Set out a soft bed and keep the living space adequately air-conditioned. There’s no place like home to keep your pet happy, healthy, and out of harm’s way.

Bringing home a kitten to Cary apartments means you will want to find ways to keep your new pet entertained. You do not want to avoid entertaining your kitten since it may result in damage to your furniture and belongings. By taking the time to find activities and toys for your new pet, you will capture your kitten's attention and avoid unnecessary problems with your cat's exploration of his or her new home.

Make a Fun Zone

A fun zone is a great way to keep your kitten entertained for hours without active participation from the pet owner or family members. Kittens enjoy climbing, exploring, and scratching as part of their play. By setting up a cat condo or a fun zone with plenty of places to climb and explore, your kitten will not get bored while you are not available to play.

Keep in mind that you can add toys to the cat condo or cat tree for further entertainment. You are not limited to the basic structure, and you can make it a fun zone for your kitten.

Provide Cat Toys

Cat toys are ideal when playing with your kitten or giving your kitten something for his or her entertainment. Opt for toys that look like small birds or mice. You can even use small balls to keep your kitten entertained. You do not want to use your fingers or toes, since that may teach your kitten bad habits as he or she grows.

Use toys that encourage your cat to pounce, jump, chase, or engage in instinctual behavior. The toys will entertain your kitten and allow you to play with your pet while avoiding accidental scratches and injuries.

Give Your Kitten a Food Puzzle

Food puzzles are a great way to keep your kitten entertained while you are at work or away from apartments in Cary. Your kitten will enjoy pushing the puzzle around and figuring out the method to get at the treat inside. It will also give your kitten special treats when you are away and cannot give your kitten a treat.

The advantage of a puzzle is that it challenges your kitten and encourages him or her to think through the process to get the food out of the toy. You can also fill the puzzle with cat food rather than treats to avoid over-feeding your pet.

Kittens are curious and prone to exploration. That can mean your kitten will climb furniture and curtains while exploring your home. By setting up fun games, entertainment, and puzzles, you will keep your pet's attention.
